Honors due for alumni and administrator

WALLINGFORD — The Wallingford Education Foundation is honoring former students who have gone on to make a difference.

This year’s six candidates for the distinguished alumni awards, now in their eighth year, include a nationally recognized farmer, the owner of several local car dealerships and a former school superintendent who is not a Wallingford graduate but will receive an honorary award.

Dale Wilson had a 37-year career in the town’s school system, beginning as a teacher at Lyman Hall and working his way up to superintendent.

“He had such an influence for so many years,” said David Baker, chairman of the Wallingford Education Foundation. “We wanted to do something for him. He knows so many people and we were glad to nominate him.”

Wilson is just the second person to receive an honorary award from the foundation.

The other five honorees are Joseph E. Geremia, John S. Barberino, Michael Kolakowski, Carol P. Wallace and Donald C. Warzocha.

The awards dinner that will honor the five alumni and Wilson is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Wallingford Education Foundation and helps fund its minigrants program, which gives thousands of dollars each year for teachers’ programs that are not included in the school budget.

“We typically raise between $6,000 and $10,000 with the dinner,” Baker said. “We raised $8,000 last year and we’re hoping to do better than that this year.”

Geremia, a 1989 graduate of Sheehan High School, is a third-generation family farmer in Wallingford.

“I’m extremely honored and humbled,” Geremia said. “I’ve never stopped learning.”

Geremia said he was looking forward to seeing some of his former teachers.

“I did a lot of learning in school that made me who I am today,” he said.

Barberino, a 1968 graduate of Lyman Hall High School, is the longtime owner of several automobile dealerships. Kolakowski graduated from Sheehan High School in 1981 and is president and chief executive officer of KBE Building Corp., a $300 million commercial construction firm based in Farmington and Columbia, Md.

Wallace attended Wallingford schools through ninth grade before graduating from Choate Rosemary Hall in 1973. She is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cooper-Atkins Corp., a Middlefield-based manufacturer of temperature, time and humidity instruments. Warzocha graduated from Lyman Hall High School in 1959 and is a retired commercial pilot and Vietnam Air Force veteran.

“All of the honorees have made significant contributions to the community in their personal or professional lives,” Baker said. “This is a night for the teachers to enjoy the fruits of their labor.”

The dinner will be held at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn at 6 p.m. March 23. Tickets are $60, with proceeds to go to the Wallingford Education Foundation.

WALLINGFORD— Instituting a pay-for-play system — charging student athletes $100 a sport, with a family cap of $300 — would not bring in enough money (an esti­mated $100,000) to make or break the school district’s budget, but it would mean the elimination of more than 150 positions and it doesn’t sit well with many coaches, players and school board members.

Parents of students who play on the ice hockey team are already dishing out nearly $1,000 on equipment. For other sports, such as basketball, expenses are low and equipment minimal, but paying to play could pose a problem for some families.

“I don’t think it’s fair at all,” said Sheehan High School’s Taylor Neelon, a freshman basketball and volleyball player. “I think less people will want to participate in sports if they have to pay $100.”

Other districts across the state have taken to the idea, charging anywhere between $50 and thousands of dollars per student athlete. But as far as some coaches are concerned, not only would the structure restrict ath­letes from playing multiple sports, it also challenges the whole nature of sports programs.

“I’m completely against it,” said Tim Belcher, hockey coach at Lyman Hall High School. “I think it would turn high school athletics (into) sort of like a youth league. You pay in the youth leagues and you basically are not earning playing time; you’re granted it. I always thought high school athletics was the bridge to college and university athlet­ics, where you earn what you get. I think you’d be taking that (away) completely.”

Chairman Thomas Hennessey, a baseball coach in Stratford, said he plans to be a vocal opponent of the initiative on the nine-member Board of Education in the coming weeks, before the board approves a budget to then be sent to the mayor on Jan. 25. “Pay to play” would contribute an estimated $100,000 to an $88 million budget. “It’s something that hopefully we’ll get a better feel on as the budget process goes through the tracks,” Hennessey said. “I’m hoping that we can look at some other av­enues.”

Money raised by “pay to play” would go into an account at each school and be used to cover costs. The district would subsidize expenses for those families that cannot afford the costs, including those students who receive free or reduced-price lunches.

“Our goal is not to make this an elitist sports system,” said School Superintendent Salvatore Menzo.

Junior varsity athletes at Sheehan were concerned that many students would opt out of playing multiple sports next year. Freshman Kyle Paolella said he’d have to pick football over basketball and track and field. “I don’t like it,” he said.

While no coach wants to see athletes stop playing be­cause their families can’t afford to pay, it’s not the hardest pill to swallow when looking at the larger picture of the district’s proposal for next year, said Joe Gaetano, Shee­han’s boys basketball coach.

“Everybody’s more concerned about the layoffs than they are about the pay-for-play,” he said. “There are a lot of people whose lives could be turned upside down.”

When I was a kid, I used to color rocks and sell them door-to-door. I usually did pretty well with that. Sometimes I would concoct knickknacks with yarn and hawk those, too. And when it came to selling Girl Scout cookies, I was the champ three years running.
But a fundraiser for my school? Such a thing was unknown.

Choate has considerable impact on Wallingford

WALLINGFORD – An elephant seems to plod itself into the room whenever the subject of Old Durham Road comes up.

Choate Rosemary Hall has requested that the town close a half-mile portion of the road so the school can establish an environmental preserve in the area, and the elephant is the fact that Choate, as an educational institution, is exempt from paying taxes.

The school’s campus occupies 450 acres of land in the center of town, houses 119 buildings with an assessed value of about $91 million. That amounts to $2 million in property taxes that Choate, if it were a for-profit business, would pay to the town.

In 2008, Choate paid about $16,000 in taxes for several properties it owns that are not used for educational purposes, Comptroller James Bowes estimated last month; yet the school maintains a $200 million endowment and many residents, citing the tumultuous economic climate, have vocally expressed their opinion that the school, since it has such a sizable savings account, should be making some sort of good faith gesture to the town in the form of a payment in lieu of taxes.

“It’s something that should have been discussed, even before (the Old Durham Road) issue came up,” said Robert Gross, a mainstay at most of the town’s board and committee meetings who has repeatedly raised the issue at Town Council meetings; Gross is running for a spot on the council this year as a Democrat. “As a good citizen – and Choate’s a good citizen of the town of Wallingford – they should do their share for the town; they should be approached to sit down and talk about (the possibility of some sort of payment), that’s all. Everybody, in these economic times, should help and pull together.”

Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr., however, has publicly stated that he considers Choate a significant asset to the town, and that he feels approaching them for some form of a payment in lieu of taxes would be inappropriate, for a variety of reasons.

“Choate has a national, if not international, reputation, so Choate brings a notoriety, a prestige to the town that is very special in my view,” Dickinson said. “Wallingford becomes known not just as Wallingford, but as the home of Choate, an institution that is known all over the world.”

There are varying degrees of precedence, however, for private schools throughout the state that make voluntary payments to their host towns.

Two Washington schools, the Glenholme School and the Gunnery, both make voluntary payments to the town, First Selectman Mark Lyon told the Record-Journal last month, but those payments amount to substantially less than what the schools would owe in taxes, he said.

The Loomis Chaffee School, a Windsor-based boarding school with an endowment similar in size to Choate’s, does not make any sort of an annual payment, Town Manager Peter Souza told the Record-Journal last month, but has made donations and other one-time contributions in the past, most notably $250,000 several years ago to pay for the bulk of repairs on a section of a town road that runs through the campus.

Cheshire Academy, 10 Main St., Cheshire, makes a token payment of $1,000 to the town each year, which Deputy Finance Director James Jaskot said last month he couldn’t attribute, but which dates back decades.

Can’t beat the price of schools’ Web upgrade

SOUTHINGTON— When parents visit the school sys­tem’s Web site, they are greeted with a text-heavy page with so many links that it can be confusing to navigate. By the time students return to school in the fall, the adminis­tration hopes to unveil a more user-friendly site Technology Director Karen Veilleux said a Web site re­vamp has been pondered for a while. School Superintendent Joseph V. Erardi said the price for the design — nothing — played a big factor in decision to move forward with the proj­ect.

“We’re looking to enhance the public school Web page and make it much more inter­active and hands-on,” Erardi said. “The price was certainly right. We are able to get all this work done at no cost.”

Jeff Munk, father of Southington High School teacher Allison Gamzon, has volunteered his time and ex­pertise to help with the design portion of the Web site, while technology department staffers, such as Lura Terrace, are busy working on the con­tent sections.

“I don’t know exactly how it developed,” Munk said. Gam­zon “might have mentioned that I am an art director and I design stuff. Web sites, I do as freelance work. Lura contacted me and we started talking about all this. I thought ‘Since it is for education and given the economy, I can’t possibly charge you for this.’ ” Munk is art director at Conair Corp. in Stamford, de­signing packaging and advertisements. He said he does Web design and interactive work on the side from his home in Trumbull.

One of the problems with the current school Web site is its text-heavy nature, Erardi said. The redesign will include an introductory portal page with streamlined links to get people to the information they are looking for more quickly, Veilleux said.

“I think the existing site, if you struggle with the Web or if you are not there often, at times it is problematic and cumbersome. This will be a much easier opportunity for parents to find exactly what they are looking for,” Erardi said. “I’m thrilled about it. The first impression is a lasting one. I want them to feel the district is cutting edge and that we have embraced technol­ogy.”

On the main page of the cur­rent Web site, there are 10 text links below the banner and heavy text content underneath them. There is only one small image, an image of a town school that changes every few seconds as part of a slide show. The new page will have six button-style links at the top to direct visitors to subpages for the categories of the site, large photographs of in-school scenes and four text links at the bottom of the page. The six button links will feature drop­down menus to offer visitors a route to many other pages from one main page.

Beyond the home page, Munk said, he also designed a new banner for the top of all the other pages. The banner will look similar to the main page, with the same links and two pictures that blend to­gether as one large image that spans across the banner.

The banner will be featured throughout all district Web sites, including the schools’ Web pages.

“It’s not really a complete overhaul. We are redesigning it and moving pages. We are giv­ing it a new look and feel,” Veilleux said. “We are reorgan­izing our pages to be more consistent.”

Erardi said having an in­creased Web presence is be­coming more important for schools in such a technologi­cally advanced era. The new update will help reflect the dedication to technology.

He said the schools may re­quire teachers, as part of their contract, to maintain a basic personal Web site with details of their classes. The town is preparing to begin negotia­tions on a new contract with its teachers.

“If you are not on the cutting edge with technology, you are nowhere. It is for tomorrow’s generation. One of the back to­ school conversations with ad­ministrators is an expectation of a Web presence with all cre­dentialed staff. If there is a need for additional training, we will provide that,” Erardi said. “The easiest way for par­ents to communicate with staff is through an electronic medium.”

While talking about the Web site, Munk himself served as an example of the ease of com­munication through electronic media that Erardi envisions. Munk has never been to Southington to meet with dis­trict staff on the project. Everything has been done through email, phone calls or the Web.
