Editor: This is in response to the R-J’s November 10 article regarding “PZC wants right to fine.” As a taxpayer in this town, I am totally against this, and hope the Town Council votes this down! There are several issues with this ordinance.
The first problem I have is that I believe Linda Bush may be the type of person that goes after people who she has had past problems with, where other blatant violators go untouched. My other issue is that the businesses and residents of Wallingford have a tough enough time making ends meet as it is. I can’t believe people would be able to pay a $100 fine per day for a violation that causes no major harm to anyone.
No rules have been laid out, and this is all very vague to me.
Will the daily fine be for a “gross” violation, or would someone be fined because their mailbox is crooked, or a business puts a small sandwich board sign out denoting a sale? Also, as long as it’s registered, I’ll park whatever I please on my land! Also, if the council votes this ordinance in, they would need to report to the townspeople as to who receives a fine on a daily basis, since I would then take it upon myself to drive around town taking pictures of the violations that are out there now, and demanding to know why they all are not being fined. The PZC better hire quite a few new employees, because if they don’t fine everyone, they should not fine anyone!
